Amber LairdForensic QuickBooks Cleanup Specialist
We fix the mess. You get clarity.
You’re great at what you do. Bookkeeping isn’t it, and somewhere along the way the numbers got away from you. I fix the past and hand you back clean, tax-ready books, with a straight answer to the one question that actually matters: where’s my money?
Free. A real person, not software. No pressure.
A recent cleanup: a $47,328 balance-sheet variance, 18 months unreconciled, handed back as a zero-variance balance sheet. From my own case files.
If the business grew faster than the books could keep up
The mess rarely comes from neglect. It comes from momentum. The work took off, the decisions piled up, and the records fell behind. It hits hardest in the cash-heavy, equipment-heavy businesses that scale fast: the trades, home and field services, construction, and e-commerce. That’s exactly when I’m at my best.
You might be searching for a bookkeeper, a CPA, or just “help with QuickBooks.” If the books are behind or a mess, the first thing you need isn’t ongoing bookkeeping. It’s someone to fix the foundation. That part is me.
The trade that took off
Lawncare, landscaping, HVAC, a contractor. Trucks, crews, and equipment showed up faster than the bookkeeping ever could.
The loan or bonding application
A bank or bonding company wants clean, current books, and yours need to be ready to pass a hard look.
The partner or family change
A partner joined or left, or life changed, and the records never caught up to the new reality.
The exit on the horizon
Thinking about selling? A buyer reads your numbers first. They have to tell a clean, true story.
Bookkeeper, retainer firm, cleanup specialist
Most owners hire the wrong help for the stage they’re in
Three different roles, three different jobs. A messy-book situation usually needs all three at different points. Most owners hire only the first and wonder why it never gets clean.
Role 1
Hourly bookkeeper
Hourly. Generalist. Month after month.
Best for clean books and steady, ongoing work.
Where it breaks: a foundation that's already broken. The cleanup never quite happens.
Hire them after the cleanup, not for it.
Role 2
Retainer firm
A monthly bundle. Fractional CFO. Dashboards.
Best for CFO-level ongoing work once you're scaling.
Where it breaks: cleanup is buried in a broad scope and competes with the weekly forecast for the same hours.
The right call once your books are already clean.
Role 3 · this is what I do
Cleanup specialist
One engagement. Scope locked before work begins.
Forensic reconstruction: messy QuickBooks rebuilt into tax-ready books with zero variance, full reconciliation, and documentation.
Then it's handed back. You keep your bookkeeper, your CPA, your relationships. I step away.
You don't need me forever. You need me once, done right.
A cleanup I still talk about
A Green Beret who built a construction company faster than anyone could keep the books
He left the service, started building, and the company took off. Before he knew it he was buying trucks, trailers, and equipment, and making bigger decisions every week. He knew his gift was the work, not the ledger. So he did what the best of them do. He asked for help.
This thing is really working, and I’m just making these decisions, and I’m thinking, where’s my money?
I cleaned it up, and along the way taught him what the numbers meant, so he could read his own business going forward. That’s the whole point. Not just reports and good luck. Clarity you keep.
A real engagement
When a cleanup is the difference between a deal that closes and one that doesn’t
Two co-owners in their late twenties, a $5.5M restoration company, reached out with a half-page email asking for help understanding what their insurance carriers actually owed them.
After the review, the real problem wasn’t what they’d asked about. The books had been run by an undertrained offshore bookkeeper for years, and the link between their job-management software and QuickBooks had broken quietly. The company had grown faster than the foundation could hold.
The review surfaced what they hadn’t asked about: $2.69M in contract labor paid by Zelle with no 1099 documentation, a six-figure exposure that would have killed their exit deal in due diligence. Inter-company loans with no paper trail. Owner draws miscoded as expenses.
A half-page email became a 19-page assessment. Their exit prep went from “we’ll figure it out” to a documented plan with clean books and the risk already handled.
The work isn’t data entry. It’s seeing what the numbers are hiding.
What you actually walk away with
Not a lecture. Not a login to one more tool. Clean books and a clear head.
The past, made right
Fully reconciled QuickBooks, a balance sheet that actually balances, and a clean P&L your tax preparer will thank you for.
A walkthrough that makes sense
A short recorded video that walks you through what was wrong, what I fixed, and what your numbers are actually telling you.
Understanding you keep
You'll finally be able to read your own business, so it doesn't drift back into a mess next year.

A free QuickBooks review, done by a real expert
This isn’t an automated score. I personally open your actual QuickBooks and run it through my QuickBooks Diagnostic and Cleanup Assessment, the same one I use on paying cleanups, then send you a short recorded walkthrough in plain English: what I see, and what it would take to make it right. You decide where to go from there, on your own timeline.

Meet Amber
I’ve spent 30 years in finance and accounting. It started with 13 years inside a tech startup that grew from barely a half-dozen people, then three multi-million-dollar businesses of my own with my husband, including a 67-unit extended-stay hotel doing $76K a month that I kept on track with nothing but the numbers and a refusal to guess. I’ve sat in your chair, the owner who knows the books are behind and feels it.
That’s why the work is never cold. I fix the mess, and I explain it, because a business owner deserves to understand their own money. The way I put it: tell me what this means.

Questions owners ask first
Do you work in my industry?
Almost certainly. Most cleanups are service-based businesses: construction, e-commerce, specialty trades like a sign designer, and private family offices. I work in QuickBooks Online, so if that's your system, I can help.
Is my financial information safe?
Yes. You share view-only access or a simple export, you stay in control the whole time, and your information is handled securely and never sold or shared for marketing.
How long does a cleanup take?
Most run about three to four weeks, depending on how far behind the books are. The free review gives you an exact scope before you commit to anything.
What will it cost?
Every set of books is different, so there's no one-size price. The free review gives you an exact, no-obligation scope, so you know before you decide anything.
What exactly is the free review?
I personally run your QuickBooks through my Diagnostic and Cleanup Assessment and send you a recorded walkthrough. It's a real expert, not an automated score, and there's no obligation.
I think I need a bookkeeper. Is that what this is?
A lot of owners come to me looking for a bookkeeper. Here's the thing: a bookkeeper keeps clean books clean, month to month. If yours are behind or a mess, hiring one just builds on a shaky foundation. I fix the foundation first, then your regular bookkeeper, or one I can point you to, keeps it going. First the cleanup, then the bookkeeping.
My CPA or accountant said my books are too messy to work with. What now?
That's the exact moment I'm built for. I rebuild the books to tax-ready, fully reconciled and documented, so your CPA can pick them up and file without the headache. You keep your CPA. I just make their job possible again.
Do you take over my bookkeeping?
No. The cleanup is one engagement. When it's done, your books are tax-ready and you hand them off to whoever does your ongoing work, your bookkeeper or your CPA. If you need ongoing bookkeeping, I'll guide you on the best next steps.
